Why are They Called Euro Pillows?
Euro pillows were not very common outside of Europe. They are now gaining in popularity in the United States which leads to the question, “why are they called euro pillows?” Not many people know that euro size pillows are very common in Europe. This is a particular size of pillow that is traditionally used on a bed for decorative purposes. Not many Europeans actually sleep on a euro pillow.
The reason it is called a euro pillow is for that reason, it is a traditional size pillow in Europe. That is the only reason. This pillow will always be twenty six inches by twenty six inches. Most pillows in the United States are rectangle no matter what the size. The only square pillows are decorative and those come in many sizes.
If you purchase a euro pillow insert, then you can be assured that it measures twenty six inches by twenty six inches. It will not be any smaller than that nor will it be any larger than that. If you get a pillow that is twenty four inches by twenty four inches then it is not one of the true square euro pillows.
People have been cushioning their heads with pillow since the ancient Persian and Asian people started using them nearly an entire millennia ago. The first types of pillows were filled with buckwheat hulls and were later used as objects of trade. The idea of decorating pillows also originated in these two areas.
The concept made its way to Europe and they grabbed onto it very quickly. Soon ladies of means were doing cross stitching to decorate their pillows and teaching their daughters the same skill. Decorated pillows became the height of fashion and these ladies would go to many lengths to try and outdo the patterns and designs that they would come up with for their pillows.
These pillows were typically made to be close to the same size as what we now know as euro pillows. As time progressed, pillows for sleeping took on a more rectangular shape and the square pillows were used more for decoration. They were still skillfully decorated by the ladies of the house. Some of the less prosperous ladies who learned the skill would make these covers and sell them to the more affluent ladies who did not have this talent.
As time moved forward and technology improved, machine manufactured pillow covers became more cost effective and less labor intensive. Many ladies found that there were other things that they could do with their time rather than decorating pillow covers. Even though making the pillow covers for euro pillows went out of fashion, the pillows themselves were still all the rage.
Now people in the United States are becoming introduced by the size of pillow. That is the basic answer to why this particular pillow size is called a euro pillow. It is simply because the pillow is a common and popular size in Europe.
